Construction of Hull #1 has begun! The Townsend 34 is being built like a racing sailboat - light and super efficient. The semi-displacement hull allows for higher speeds. It will also have everything expected in a cruising boat - a full galley including hot water and a heat pump for cabin heat and air conditioning. It has a spacious V-berth and the enclosed aft cockpit/patio doubles as a guest cabin. It is towable - dry weight is around 5,000 lbs so a massive tow vehicle is not necessary.
The hull is engineered to exceed ISO Category C and made from basalt fibers. Basalt is lighter, stronger, and has a lower carbon footprint than fiberglass. If the boat is plugged into the grid/net metered while at the dock, then the carbon footprint for both construction and operation of the boat will be zero within 20 years.
