We designed the Townsend 34 from the hull up to be the most practical small cruiser in existence. You can go indefinitely at 7-8 knots absolutely anywhere. Top speed is 12 + knots.

Confidence: Range at 7-8 knots is several days. Then charge overnight from any standard 30 amp shore power connection. No shore power? No problem: unlimited solar-only range at only slightly slower speeds. No diesel ‘range-extender’ necessary. The sun is your back up. It rises every day.

Basalt fiber is stronger and lighter than fiberglass yet has a lower carbon footprint. Of course this boat uses no carbon t operate, but when you feed the grid from your solar panels while at the slip, like net-metering the solar panels on your house, the energy you produce will offset the carbon footprint of building the boat in less than 20 years.

This calculation is for ideal sea conditions, meaning no wind or current. House loads for systems and cooking are included.
Here you can see 100 miles at 8 knots and 300 miles at 6 knots.
With no sun at all the boat will go almost 200 miles at 6 knots and almost 300 miles at 5 knots.
Of course solar only range is infinite at 5 knots
Summer range = average sun for summer days
We calculated poor conditions to mean wind and sea state equal to 2 knots of adverse current. We added the power draw of using the optional Seakeeper.
Even in these conditions there is still 100 miles at 7 knots in average summer sun and 6 knots without any sun.
Of course solar only range is infinite at 5 knots.
